Social media explained

Social media are the forms of media where people come to share their ideas, interests, passions, and opinions, and give people the ability to share the message with others.

Social Media can be created by “the users” and interaction is possible via the Internet.

The most common social media tools include:

  • Blog – user generated website where entries are made in journal style. They often provide commentary on news, politics, films etc or can serve as an online personal journal.
  • Podcast- Media files distributed over the Internet using syndication feeds usually using MP3 files.
  • RSS –News feeds that allow you to see when websites have added new content. You get the latest content and video in one place as soon as its published.
  • Wikis -a website that allows visitors to add, remove, edit and change content, typically without the need for registration. It also allows for linking among any number of pages 
  • Vidcasts – A video clip designed to be viewed in a portable device. Also called a "vcast" and "videocast," a vidcast is the video counterpart of a podcast and uses the same RSS syndication method for delivering material to users
  • Virtual Worlds - computer-based simulated environment intended for its users to inhabit and interact via avatars (virtual people).
